The Buvuma Islands are a chain of about 50 islands in Lake Victoria in Uganda. Some of the smaller islands are just a few kilometers off the mainland, while others are farther out in the lake. A few islands of the chain are in Kenya's territorial waters.
The largest of the Islands, Buvuma Island, is located about 90 km (55 miles) east of Uganda's capital Kampala and 25 km (15 miles) south of Jinja, Uganda, where Lake Victoria empties to form the Nile River. Covering about 200 square miles, the island is home to about 20,000 people.

The main economy is fishing, and the island residents are skilled fisherman. There is also some limited agriculture on the islands, and forests are being cut to burn charcoal to sell on the mainland.
